Broken dehumidifier significantly reduces visibility inside the Berry
MARQUETTE -- There is a surefire way to beat the heat this week across the Upper Peninsula. Just head to the biggest air conditioner in the U.P., the Berry Event Center in Marquette. Although the dehumidifier wasn't working properly this morning for the beginning of the US speedskating short track national team camp.
Temperatures were as cool as ever, and once the speedskaters began whipping around the rink at high speeds, the fog dissipated quickly.
A handful of athletes from the Vancouver Olympics are in attendance this week and they say the foggy ice makes for some interesting practices. "It feels like we're skating on a cloud, that's what our coach keeps saying," said Katherine Reutter. "It usually clears out once we get a couple laps going, but I've never skated in anything like it before. It's definitely an experience."
Always on top of things, Olympic Gold medalist Shani Davis knew what the problem was right away. "I guess lightning struck the dehumidifier a couple of nights ago," said the two time Olympic gold medalist. "So that's why it's so foggy out there. It's real mystic. It's kind of like a childhood fantasy maybe."
In all, seven skaters from this week's group participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, including Lana Gehring, Katherine Reutter, Simon Cho, Travis Jayner, Alyson Dudek, and Jonathan Kuck as well as gold medalist and former USOEC resident athlete Shani Davis.
The camp is one of the hardest times of the year training-wise for the skaters. They will be on the ice twice a day everyday this week through Saturday.
The public is welcome to watch the following on-ice team practices:
Monday, July 18 - 7-9 a.m. and 2-4 p.m.
Tuesday, July 19 - 7-8:30 a.m.
