International Mtn. Bicycling Association in Copper Harbor for Great Lakes Mtn. Bike Summit
HANCOCK -- This weekend is the second annual Ride the Keweenaw weekend, where mountain bikers can learn about the Copper Country's trail system.
This also marks the first International Mountain Bicycling Association/Great Lakes Mountain Bike Summit which is taking place in Copper Harbor.
Cyclists can talk to national and regional trail advocates and learn more about trail development throughout the area.
Three rides took place Saturday: one in the morning on the Michigan Tech Trails, one in the evening on the Swede town trails in Calumet, and one along churning rapids in Hancock Saturday afternoon.
The Keweenaw is off to a good start in making the trail system friendly for everyone at all riding levels. "It really is about how you design the trail, first and foremost, to fit within a landscape," said IMBA President Mike Van Abel. "Then, of course, trail signage so people can navigate and find their way, is really important especially if you want people to be welcome here."
"There's nothing like signage," Van Abel continued, "that tells people, yea come here and enjoy this and leave no trace if you can, and signage can be interpreted in that regard. It can be educational, not just help people find their way."
More activities are set for Sunday (5/29), including a women's skill clinic at 10 a.m. in Copper Harbor Park.
There's also another ride in Copper Harbor starting at 1 p.m. These events are free to participants.
There is a fund-raising dinner at 7 p.m. at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. The cost is $35 and you must be registered for the dinner.
