The Spitfires have signed free agent Michigan high school star Ben Johnson to an OHL contract and education package.

Johnson, a 16-year-old, 5'11" forward, was named a Michigan High School Athletic Association first-team all-star and was chosen "Mr. Hockey" as the top high school player in the state last sesaon. He's just the second junior to win the award (Justin Adbelkader, Mona Shore High School, 2003-2004, now with Detroit Red Wings).

In 30 games with the Calumet High School Copper Kings, Johnson scored 37 goals and added 40 assists for 77 points. He also played four games with the United States Under-17 Development Program, scoring four goals and adding one assist.

Johnson also won the 2011 Hobey Baker Character Award, given to the player who most demonstrates character and sportsmanship. 

"The Windsor Spitfires are excited to add a player of Ben's caliber," said Spitfires Vice President and General Manager Warren Rychel. "He has exceptional speed and is a solid two-way player who is tough to play against. He'll be one of the fastest players in the OHL next season. He has three years of eligibility and will fit in well with our talented crop of players." 

Johnson will join the Spitfires for the 2011-2012 season and will attend St. Anne's High School in Lakeshore.
