Seniors Katie Wysocky and Sarah Stream and head coach John Barnes of the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team have each received all-region accolades announced today. The sports information directors from the region honored Wysocky as the Daktronics Midwest Player of the Year and chose Stream to the Daktronics All-Midwest Region Second Team. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association named Wysocky one of five State Farm All-America Team finalists from the Midwest Region and selected Barnes as the Russell Athletic Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
Wysocky adds region player of the year and All-America finalist to a long list of accolades that have already been bestowed. Last week, the 6-0 forward was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the GLIAC Tournament’s most valuable player. She earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America First Team status from the College Sports Information Directors of America two weeks ago. Wysocky, who earned GLIAC Player of the Week seven times in 2009-10, is Michigan Tech’s all-time leading scorer (1,862 points) and rebounder (1,197). The four-time All-GLIAC honoree will now be eligible for All-America honors from both Daktronics and the WBCA.
Stream is a Daktronics All-Region Second Team selection for the second straight year. The 5-7 guard averages 10.2 points and 3.8 assists per game and was named ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Third Team two weeks ago. She leads the GLIAC and ranks third in NCAA Division II in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.6-to-1. Stream is a four-time All-GLIAC pick and was named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team last weekend.
Barnes, who was honored last week as the GLIAC Coach of the Year, guided Tech to a school-record 25 regular season wins and GLIAC-record 20 regular season league victories. The seventh-year skipper has led the Huskies to three GLIAC North Division titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and a 153-54 overall record (.739 winning percentage) in his tenure. He is Tech’s first region coach of the year since Darla Olson won the award in 2001. As the coach of the year from the region, Barnes is a finalist to be named Russell Athletic/WBCA National Coach of the Year.
The No. 3-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will host the 2010 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Midwest Regional at the SDC Gym this weekend. The Huskies face Northern Kentucky Friday (Mar. 12) at 6 p.m. in a first-round game.
