TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State is appealing part of an NCAA punishment that would strip the school of victories in 10 sports, including as many as 14 in football.
Florida State president T.K. Wetherell said Tuesday the university will hire outside counsel to assist with its appeal. Wetherell, a former Seminole football player, said it's unfair to more than 450 athletes who participated in the games and were not involved in the cheating.
Football coach Bobby Bowden has 382 wins. That's just one fewer than Penn State's Joe Paterno, the all-time major college leader.
The NCAA also took away scholarships in the 10 sports and put Florida State on four years' probation as punishment for 61 athletes accused of cheating in a music history class.
