The Northern Michigan University soccer seniors went out on top in their final game in the Green and Gold as the Wildcats defeated Malone 7-0 on Sunday (Oct. 28) to snap a seven-game winless streak. NMU finished the season 4-13 overall and 3-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“We had a good day today and it was a lot of fun,” NMU coach Matt Granstrand said. “We knew that this year was going to be a challenge but it’s a great way to end it. This is a good group and it’s the most fun I’ve had coaching in many years. It’s a good way to go out for the seniors.”

Seniors Becky Fiorenza, Amelia Johnson, Jenna Peplinski and Brekelle Sellers all started the game. Sellers scored her first goal of the season and added two assists. Johnson scored her third of the season.

“The seniors have been great leaders,” Granstrand added. “They work hard, they play hard and with a year like this, they kept it positive and fun. We trained hard and played hard every day and that’s a credit to the seniors.”

Sophomore Tevun Sellers opened the game’s scoring with her third of the year from sister Brekelle 9:15 in. Johnson added to the lead six minutes later as she shot in a loose ball inside the box. Sophomore Taylor Smith scored her third of the year in the 24th minute as she dribbled up the middle and shot into the net.

The ‘Cats scored three goals in the first six minutes of the second half. Sophomore Kim Rietveld scored her second of the season three minutes after the break as Brekelle Sellers fed her the ball for her second assist of the day. Tevun Sellers added her second of the game a minute later as she rebounded a shot by Rietveld and Brekelle Sellers buried her first of the year on a long shot 35 yards out.

Sophomore Heather Amr got on the board with her first career goal at 86:31 with the assist going to freshman Katie Lyders-Petersen.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard tallied five saves for her third shutout of the year.

Malone wraps up their first season in the GLIAC with an overall record of 1-14-1 and 0-12-1 in conference play.
