#16 NMU Hockey falls to #9 Notre Dame 5-2

The No. 16-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team was defeated in its home and Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener from the Berry Events Center on Friday (Oct. 26) night by No. 9
Notre Dame. The Wildcats held a 2-1 lead after the first period but the Fighting Irish scored four unanswered goals for the 5-2 victory.

NMU is now 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCHA. Notre Dame is 4-1 and 1-0 in the CCHA.

“We gave up two goals in the first minute and a half of the first two periods and that took the wind out of our sails,” NMU coach Walt Kyle said. “We spent a lot of time defending tonight and we got tired towards the end.”

The Irish got on the board 1:27 into the game with a one-timer from David Gerths as he received a pass from Kevin Nugent in front of NMU sophomore goaltender Jared Coreau.

Sophomore forward Ryan Daugherty scored his third of the season on a rebound after senior Kyle Follmer’s shot. Also assisting on the goal was junior Stephan Vigier.

Vigier scored the second NMU goal with five second left in the first as he picked up a loose puck on side of the Notre Dame net and shot it past Irish goaltender Steven Summerhays for the 2-1 lead. Assisting on Vigier’s first of the season was junior defenseman CJ Ludwig.

Notre Dame’s two second period goals were scored by Austin Wuthrich and Bryan Rust. Wuthrich split a pair of NMU defenders for his first of the season 1:30 into the second period. Rust blasted a shot from the mid circle for his second of the year at 4:01.

Peter Schneider scored 3:51 into the third and Anders Lee added an empty-net goal with 1:09 left in the game.

NMU was 0-for-2 on the power play and ND was 0-for-3. The Wildcats took five minor penalties and the Irish had four.

Coreau finished with 33 saves on the night and is 3-2 between the pipes this season. Summerhays (4-1) had 22 saves for Notre Dame.

The two teams wrap up the CCHA series on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 7:35 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.
