#17 NMU hockey suffers first loss to Nebraska Omaha 5-2

The No. 17-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team lost for the first time this season on Friday (Oct. 19) with a 5-2 defeat to Nebraska Omaha from CenturyLink Center in the opener of the
non-conference series. The Mavericks took a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats got on the board midway through the second period.
Brock Montpetit opened the game’s scoring 10:36 into the game to give UNO the lead. Michael Young scored a minute and a half later for the 2-0 lead.
In the second period, Brent Gwidt scored on a breakaway to give the Mavericks a three-goal lead 3:48 after intermission.
Freshman Darren Nowick scored his first goal in the Green and Gold sweater 9:14 into the second to cut the lead to two. Assisting on the goal was freshman Justin Rose, his second of the season.
Matt White scored the fourth goal for UNO before the second intermission and Andrej Sustr added the fifth in the third.
At 13:12 into the third period, sophomore forward Reed Seckel scored his second of the season with senior forward Matt Thurber grabbing his third assist. It was Seckel's 10th career goal.
Senior goaltender Jared Coreau made the start for the ‘Cats. He stopped 22 shots, including 11 in the first period before being relieved by freshman Michael Doan with 13:11 left in the third period. Doan had 14 saves in his first regular season appearance.
UNO outshot the ‘Cats 41-13. NMU took seven minor penalties while UNO had nine. The ‘Cats were 0-for-5 on the power play and the Mavericks were 1-for-3.
