The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team is in second place after the first day of the St. Clouse State University Invite from Halenbeck Pool. The Wildcats has 628 team points, trailing host St. Cloud who has 730. Also at the invite are Minnesota State-Moorhead (489.5) and Northern State (229.5).
The Wildcats won six of the 12 events on Friday (Oct. 19) and was led by first-year swimmer Crystal Bennet who won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle.
Sophomores Jordan Iverson and Tara Dowling were the top two in the 1,000 freestyle. Iverson finished in 10:59.98. Sophomore Madisen Sechena won the 200 butterfly by two tenths of a second.
In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Emily Brennan was the top finisher by almost eight seconds followed by Dowling. Sophomore Emily Bourguignon was second place in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Sophomore Molly Kearney won the three-meter dive with 235.5 points.
Sophomore Debbi Lawrence and freshman Caitlyn Brenden finished second and third in the 200 individual medley. Senior Olga Budiansky was second in the 200 breaststroke.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Bourguignon, Dowling, Lawrence and senior Lauren Cockels finished second behind St. Cloud.
The invite continues on Saturday in Minnesota.
