NMU Volleyball beats ODU in four sets 3-1

The Northern Michigan University volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak, defeating Ohio Dominican in four sets on Friday (Oct. 19) from Vandament Arena. NMU is now 14-9 overall and 6-4
in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“Our serving was really tough at the beginning of the match and really forced them out of their system,” NMU coach Dominic Yoder said. “They came back strong, made some changes and put together a good serve reception andmade some offensive changes that really took us off guard.”

The Wildcats won the first set 25-13, leading from start to finish. The balanced offensive attack in set one was led by junior Lina Lopes with three kills. Juniors Sarah Hamilton and Kalli Herron along with senior Jasmine Calhoun added two kills each. Senior Kalin Zimmerman had seven digs.

The ‘Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead, defeating the Panthers 25-22 in set two. There were three lead changes and four ties. Lopes and Herron led NMU with three kills. Zimmerman had five digs. NMU had four team blocks in the set to control the net.

After the break, ODU (10-11, 4-6 GLIAC) won set three 25-22 that included 16 ties and eight lead changes. Lauren Rindler led the Panthers with four kills and three digs in the set.

“Rindler really came in and did a nice job for ODU in set three, allowing them to win that set,” Yoder said.

Northern closed out the match in set four with a 25-22 score and a 3-1 match win. Lopes again led the team with five kills. Calhoun and Hamilton added a combined eight kills.

Lopes and Herron finished with a match-high 12 kills each. Junior Kellisha Harley setup the offense with 43 assists. Zimmerman led the defense with 24 digs. Junior Suzanne Solin added 10 digs. Calhoun finished with seven kills, three block assists and a block solo. Lopes and Hamilton each added
two block assists.

“Lina and Kalli did a really nice job on serve reception and were the key to our offense tonight,” Yoder added. “Both are playing six rotations and for them to step in and have good offensive and defensive performances is great.”

Tory Thompson led the Panthers with 10 kills. Darby Slavin had 38 assists. Kelsey Fortney had 10 digs and three service aces.

NMU hosts Tiffin on Saturday (Oct. 20) at 4 p.m. The Dragons were defeated 3-2 at Michigan Tech on Friday.
