Latest news, weather, high school sports for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

NMU Volleyball falls to Walsh 3-2

The Northern Michigan University volleyball team came away with a split over the weekend after falling in five set to Walsh on Saturday (Oct. 6) from North Canton, Ohio. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup between the two schools was the first.

The Wildcats (12-6, 5-4 GLIAC) took advantage in set one, 29-27. The Cavaliers (5-9, 3-6 GLIAC) came back to tie the match in set two, 25-21. NMU won the third set (25-23) before losing the final two (25-21, 15-12).

Junior Kalli Herron had a match-high 23 kills while senior Kalin Zimmerman led with 20 digs. Herron and junior Lina Lopes each added 10 digs and Lopes tallied 17 kills. Junior setter Kellisha Harley setup the offense with 47 assists.

Walsh’s Julianne O’Donnell led with 18 kills and Krissy Sokol tallied 11 more. Devin Hummel led with 17 digs, while Brittany Morris tallied 13.

The ‘Cats finished with 61 kills and an attack percentage of .163, while the Cavaliers had 50 kills and a .144 percentage.

Northern will return home for match up with non-conference Finlandia  at 7 p.m. on Tuesday from Vandament Arena.
