Lake Superior State battled back from a 2-0 deficit to win Set 3, but Michigan Tech prevailed during a hotly-contested fourth set to secure a 3-1 match victory Friday during the Lakers' volleyball home opener at Cooper Gym.
Michigan Tech (4-5 overall, 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) claimed a 25-23, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22 win.
LSSU (3-6 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) fought back from a 19-14 deficit to win Set 3. The Lakers were within a point of MTU through most of Set 4 until the Huskies built a 23-21 lead.
Emily Snyder, who missed last weekend's tournament due to an injury, returned to the lineup and led LSSU with nine kills, while Sydne McMullen added seven kills and had the team's highest attack percentage of .278. Gaby Olsen and Nikki Stratelak added six kills each. Setter MaryLou Drobish turned in 33 assists.
Olsen also compiled a match-leading five solo blocks and two assists, while fellow rookie Julia Peterson added three block assists. LSSU's dig leaders were Katie Fitzpatrick with 12, followed by Meghan Drobish with 11, and Snyder and Stratelak with 10 each.
Shelby Jones totaled 12 kills and Jordanna Kero had 11 to lead the Huskies.
LSSU plays host to Northern Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday.
