NMU Cross Country wins Midwest Collegiate Open

The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team finished in first place at the Midwest Collegiate Open meet at the Dannehl Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday (Sept. 8). NMU’s top five runners finished in the top 15 and the Wildcats scored 47 team points, beating 16 other schools.

“The team ran an excellent and smart race today against some very good competition,” NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. “It was a lot of fun to watch.”

Junior Mandy Dye led the way for the ‘Cat for the second week in a row, finishing fifth overall in 18:57.0. Junior Mallory Celaya was two spots back in seventh at 19:13.3.

Freshman Mary Kate Cerelli rounded out the top 10, two seconds back (19:15.3). Senior Rita Woitas (19:22.3) and sophomore Olivia Howard (19:27.5) rounded out the scoring for Northern in spots 12 and 13.

UW-Parkside finished second with 77 team points, UW-Green Bay (78) was third, Bellarmine (93) fourth and the Illinois Institute of Technology (121) rounded out the top five.

“I was happy to beat the teams from our region in UW-Parkside, Bellarmine, Lewis and Michigan Tech,” Ryan added.

Freshman Megan Edic finished 14th, freshman Alexandra Bott was 22 and junior Jordyn Ross was 23rd.

Sophomore Chelsea Farquhar (29th), freshman Hannah Boyer (41st) and senior Brittany Loomis (43rd) also finished in the top 50.

The ‘Cats have next weekend off before traveling to Midland, Mich. on Sept. 22 for the Northwood Open.
