ST. IGNACE -- The speed of the North guards was too much for the South, providing the momentum for a 104-91 North victory in the 27th annual Upper Peninsula All-Star Basketball Classic.
The South led 26-20 after one quarter, thanks in part to North Dickinson's Cory Johnson. He scored six of his nine points in the first ten minutes.
The North responded in the second quarter scoring 32 points, six by Munising's Kenya Oas and five by Brimley's Michael Kuenzer and Calumet's Andy Steber to take a 52-47 advantage at halftime.
The North, coached by Munising's Dan Waterman, slowly expanded its lead to nine points after three quarters, 77-68 before winning by 13.
Sault Ste Marie's Steve Angeli and Oas each poured in 18 points for the North, but it was Angeli's ten assists that was the difference in earning Most Vauable Player laurels.
Four other North players scored in double figures. Kuenzer, Ewen-Trout Creek's Jordan LaPlant and Rudyard's Tyler Wilson had 13 while Steber chipped in eleven.
Manistique's Kyle Tiglas paced the South with 19 points, seven in the final quarter. Carney-Nadeau's Lucas Moreau was next on the list with 16. The other eight South players, coached by Kingsford's Dan Olkkonen, scored between five and nine points.
Steve Angeli's twin brother Riley put in eight points. Their father, Jamie Angeli, was the guest speaker at the pre-game breakfast.
