ST. IGNACE -- The South Girls rallied from an early fourth quarter deficit to defeat the North 80-72 and capture the 27th annual Upper Peninsula All-Star Basketball Classic.
The North jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Negaunee's Courtney Waara. Waara and her cousin, Jaclyn Waara of West Iron County, combined for 25 points for coach Greg Trowbridge of Superior Central.
The South, coached by Gladstone's Karl Dollhopf, bounced back to take a 38-37 advantage at the half.
A three-pointer by Marquette's Alyssa Lindberg gave the North a 59-57 lead early in the final period, but the South, paced by St. Ignace's Lauren Goldthorpe, Escanaba's Olivia Nash and Bark River-Harris' Jaime Madalinski, outscored their foe 23-13 the rest of the way.
Goldthorpe topped the South with 16 points.
Nash poured in 15 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to earn the game's Most Valuable Player honor. She'll continue her career next season at Oakland University.
Four South players contributed nine points, Madalinski, Rapid River's Kelly Bintner, Stephenson's Gaby Cappaert and North Central's Taylor Granquist.
Brimley's Whitney Frazier chipped in with nine points for the North while Lindberg had eight.
