Northern Michigan University’s head women’s basketball coach Troy Mattson announces the addition of Maria Almquist to join the Wildcats for the 2012-13 season. Almquist will transfer to NMU from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Almquist is a 6 foot, 2 inch forward from Hancock, Mich. She averaged 4.7 points 2.3 rebounds per game with the Bulldogs in 2011-12 while leading the team in 3-point percentage at 39 percent (16-for-43).

"Maria has size and is an extremely athletic forward who will help our front line," Mattson said. "She has the ability to shoot the three very well and will add a lot of toughness to our team. We look forward to her being a major contributor for us next season."

As a four-year starter for Hancock Central High School, Almquist is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,416 career points. She was a two-time all-state selection, a two-time U.P. Dream Team selection, the 2011 WestPAC Player of the Year and a three-time first-team all-league selection. Almquist was also an all-state and all-conference volleyball player.
