MARQUETTE -- Over a year ago, the Kingsford Krush roller derby team started operations.
Since then, the Escabana Rollin' Hellcats started a team, and now interest in Marquette has sprung up.
Both the Krush and Hellcats met with close to 30 women at the Veirling and Marquette Harbor Brewery this evening (4/16) for the informational meeting.
Members of the established teams say they'd like to see the sport grow throughout the U.P. "We're in a unique geographical situation where we're isolated," said Kingsford Krush President Karis Falls. "To have our own league here, close to home, that we can go and play and have this thing grow and be the awesome sport that it is, is amazing to me. I'm just so happy to see that happening now."
For now, Kingsford and Escanaba have to travel long hours to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Lower Michigan to get to bouts with anyone other than each other.
If the Marquette operation gets off the ground, organizers hope to begin practice in June. There was even some talk of interest up in Houghton for a derby team there.
