WINDSOR, CO -- (Courtesy of MTU Athletics) Former Michigan Tech hockey player Jordan Baker will make his professional postseason debut tonight with Colorado of the ECHL as the Eagles play in the conference quarterfinal round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs in Stockton, Calif., at 7 p.m. PT.
Baker, who concluded a five-year career at Michigan Tech in March, signed and played the final six games of the regular season with the Eagles. The 5-7 forward tallied a goal and an assist in those six games. The 24-year-old Baker skated at center and wing and saw time on both special teams units.
Colorado, which is based out of the Fort Collins area, 60 miles north of Denver, finished fourth in the ECHL’s Western Conference with a 38-28-6 record. The Eagles will face the No. 5-seeded Stockton Thunder in a best-of-five-games series beginning tonight (Apr. 3). The first two games are at Stockton Arena before the series shifts to Colorado’s Budweiser Events Center.
“It’s been unreal so far,” said Baker of his transition from Michigan Tech to the pro ranks. “I’ve been thrown right into everything, and it’s been awesome to get an opportunity to play right away. I really couldn’t have asked for anything more to start my pro career.”
Baker said he received professional offers the day after Michigan Tech was knocked out of the WCHA Final Five by Denver 3-2 in overtime on Thursday, Mar. 15. He waited through the weekend to seek the advice of the Huskies’ coaching staff before signing with Colorado. His first game with the Eagles was Friday, Mar. 23.
An assistant captain for Michigan Tech in 2011-12, Baker tallied 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 total points during his senior season. In 146 career games, the Chestermere, Alb., native registered 82 points (38g, 44a).
Baker joined another former Tech hockey player on the Colorado roster. Riley Nelson (1996-2000) was the Eagles’ fourth-leading scorer during the regular season with 60 points (25g, 35a).
