NMU Track Finishes Second at Oshkosh Invite

OSHKOSH, WI -- (Courtesy of NMU Athletics) The Northern Michigan University outdoor track and field team had a second place finish on Saturday (March 31) at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh First Chance Meet. The Wildcats had 11 first place finishes and broke a school record, scoring 235 team points. UW-Oshkosh won the meet with 237 team points.

Junior Mallory Celaya broke a school record, winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:23.44. Junior Rita Woitas (3rd), sophomore Chelsea Farquhar (4th) and junior Brittany Loomis (5th) also finished in the top five of the 5,000.

Eight ‘Cats were in the top nine in the 800 run. Senior Rachael Williams(2:26.99) won the race with sophomore Katie Granquist in second, sophomore Alicia Romano third, freshman Catlin Keskey fourth, sophomore Kristina Mattson fifth, freshman Abby Roche sixth, junior Kristina Donley eighth and freshman Kailey Sickmiller ninth.

Senior Catherine Angeli won the 100 (12.33) and 200-meter (25.36) dashes. Freshman Angelina Howard was second in the 100. Redshirt freshman Sherice Hewett was third in the 200. Hewett (15.43) and senior Melissa Christensen were the top two in the 100 hurdles.

Sophomore Sydney Schultz took home the 400 (1:02.11). Junior Colby West was second in the 400 hurdles.

Junior Nora Kiilunen (4:55.43) and freshman Larissa Halonen were the top two in the 1,500. Freshman Olivia Howard and freshman Emily Allen were second and third in the 3,000.

The 4x100 relay team took first with Howard, Angeli, freshman Samara White and Hewett racing for the ‘Cats with a time of 48.43 seconds.

Senior Bailey Franklin (5feet, 4.25 inches) won the high jump and Christensen was third. Sophomore Jamie Roberts (12 feet) won the pole vault.

Junior Mariah Beaman (100 feet, 1 inch) won the javelin throw and jumped to a third place finish in the long jump. Sophomore Katie Searles was second in the javelin and sophomore Shannon McNabb third.

The ‘Cats head back to Wisconsin next week to participate in the St. Norbert Invite on Thursday (March 5).
