MARQUETTE -- Northern Michigan's new football head coach Chris Ostrowsky is only his third day of practice with his team, so it's going to be awhile before you can see a lot of progress.

Marcus Knight is the new recruiting coordinator and receivers coach and he's heavily involved, showing techniques that will get his players away from the defensive backs at the line of scrimmage.

Returning assistant coach Rob Boss leads the offensive lineman and coordinates the running game.

Ostrowsky is very happy with the up tempo practices thus far, and says the competition for starting QB is wide open, "Our quarterback situation is unique" said the rookie head coach.  "We have two brand new guys coming back in red-shirt freshman Ryan Morley and Cody Scepaniak who is a junior college transfer from Alfred State in upstate New York. I think both of these guys are exceptional learners, but yes, I would say that it's fair we're a little ahead of the curve defensively.

With the departure of Randy Awry as defensive coordinator the Wildcat defense will be under a new system thanks to Brian Newberry and so far the players like what they see,  "I'm loving the new system, especially the new defense", Defensive end Zach Anderson said.  "With coach Newberry coming in, we're real excited moving to the 4-3 front. I know the defensive linemen are moving out of that three."

The NMU coaching staff will hold a coaches clinic open to all local high school coaches on Friday, April 13 and Saturday the 14th. registration will take place from 4-5 p.m. in the Superior Dome with guest speakers from 5-9 PM and a social from 9-11PM.

Cost of the clinic is $30 for coaches who preregister and $40 at the door.

The 15 day spring season will conclude with the annual spring game on April 21 at 3PM
