ESCANABA -- The ice was melted at the Wells Sports Complex in Escanaba, but hundreds of fans came to see some physical skating, only instead of hockey checks, it was Roller Derby.
Saturday night (3/24) was the the first time the Escanaba Hellcats hosted a bout. The team, in its first season, began practicing back in January to get ready for the event.
The season doesn't start until the fall, but the team says practice never hurt anyone. "This is kind of practice," said Head Coach Kim Segorski. "We're scheduling a few bouts here in the beginning before we start actually competing, so this is kind of fun for us. It's not a sanctioned bout, it's not going towards our rankings or anything. Our actual season will start in September, but for the next couple of months, we'll be competing and just practicing. just getting use to it, getting the girls use to it."
The Hellcats lost to the Kingsford Krush 181-60. Esky will return the favor and head down to Dickinson County in April for a rematch. Anyone woman 18 or older interested in roller derby is encouraged to visit the team's Facebook page on the Internet.
