PLYMOUTH -- Houghton's bid for a Division 3 Hockey State Championship fell just short this afternoon in Plymouth as the Gremlins lost 3-0 to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.

James Counsman scored his 35th and 36th goals of the season for the Knights in the second period, the second of which was on the power play.

Jacob Soyka ended the scoring with another goal on the man advantage for Liggett in the third period.

Houghton's best chance came on a first period penalty shot by Connor Hannon who beat Freshman goaltender Lucas Soyka but hit the left goal post.

Senior goaltender Tony Peltier made 30 saves in net for the Gremlins. Soyka stopped ten shots for the shut out.

This is the second consecutive year a team from the Upper Peninsula finished State runner-up in Division 3 (Calumet). Houghton beat defending champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central 2-1 in the semifinals on Friday.

This is the third time in school history the hockey team has finished as a state runner-up.
