Wildcat women shut down Lake Superior State offense

SAULT STE. MARIE -- (Courtesy of NMU Athletics) Three players reached double-figures in the scoring column and the defense held strong for the second game in a row, as the Northern Michigan women’s basketball team defeated Lake Superior State 55-36 on Saturday (Jan. 14).
With the win, NMU improves to 8-7 on the season and 4-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The win also marks the first time that NMU is above the .500 mark since starting the season at 2-1 back on Nov. 19. SVSU falls to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
The NMU defense showcased an encore performance of its play against Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 12. The ‘Cats limited the Lakers to just 21.4 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc. NMU also grabbed 33 defensive rebounds and forced nine turnovers that were converted to 17 ‘Cat points.
NMU soared to a 17-point, 26-9 lead at the 11:02 mark of the first half with a made three from freshman guard Alyssa Colla. The Wildcats would stretch their lead to 20 points with another three-pointer from Colla at the 8:41 mark. The Lakers were able to trim the NMU lead to 16-points by the break with the ‘Cats up 34-18 after the first 20 minutes of play.
Senior guard Chelsea Lyons got the ‘Cats on the board first in the second stanza with a layup at the 19:07 mark, putting NMU up 36-18. NMU maintained a sizable lead throughout the remaining minutes of the contest as the Lakers could get no closer than 17 points in the second half.
The ‘Cats were led Lyons, who scored 13 points and netted five rebounds and five assists. Freshman center Courtney Lemon contributed 11 points and four of the ‘Cats season-high eight blocks. Senior forward Hillary Bowling was the third NMU player to reach double-figures, piecing together a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
The Lakers were led by Cassy Schemberger with 14 points and nine rebounds.
NMU shot 37.7 percent (20-53) from the field and 33.3 percent (8-24) fromthree-point land.
The ‘Cats outrebounded the Lakers 40-39.
NMU returns home to the Berry Events Center next week for a pair ofdivisional games, hosting Grand Valley State (Jan. 19) and Ferris State(Jan. 21).
