MARQUETTE -- (Courtesy of MTU Athletics) The No. 21 Michigan Tech women’s basketball team survived a late run by Northern Michigan to defeat the Wildcats 66-60 Thursday (Jan. 5) at the Berry Events Center.
The Huskies held a 14-point lead with under five minutes remaining, but the Wildcats went on a 16-4 run to close the gap to just two, 58-56. Chelsea Lyons scored 12 of her game-high 29 points for NMU during the run.
Freshman Jillian Ritchie made the biggest 3-point basket of her career to put the Huskies up five points with 33 seconds remaining. Senior Krista Kasuboski then made three of four free throws following a pair of missed layups by Lyons to seal the victory for the Huskies.
“Our bench played quality minutes tonight and kept control of the game especially at the end with NMU’s defensive pressure and scoring,” said head coach Kim Cameron.
Senior Lindsey Lindstrom finished with a double-double for the second straight game compliments of 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Superior, Wis., native shot 6-of-9 from the field for the Huskies who improve to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Junior Emma Veach scored a team-high 13 points and added six rebounds and five assists.
Junior Sam Hoyt and senior Lynn Giesler each added 10 points.
Tech finished with a 36-31 advantage in rebounds and remains undefeated when out rebounding its opponents this season.
The Huskies shot 45-percent (22-49) in the contest after shooting 60-percent (15-25) in the first half.
Tech will play at Lake Superior State Jan. 12.
