BAY CITY -- Michigan Tech quarterback Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and defensive end Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) was named GLIAC Defensive Lineman of the Year for the second straight year as announced Thursday by the league office. Thirteen Huskies in total gained accolades from the GLIAC.
Scarlett enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history, setting school records in completion percentage (66.1), passing yards (2,406) and completions (199). He accounted for 18 touchdowns (two shy of the school record) and started all 11 games for the Huskies. Scarlett ranked in the top 10 in the league in three categories, sixth in passing yards per game (217.7), sixth in pass efficiency (146.9) and seventh in total offense (232.5).
Storm kept a hold on the defensive lineman of the year award for the second straight season after finishing second in the league with 7.5 sacks. He was third in the GLIAC in tackles for loss (14.5). Storm posted 68 tackles on the season—fourth most on the team. The senior finished his career with 18.5 sacks—third-most all-time at Michigan Tech.
Storm and three other seniors—offensive lineman Matt Gaudard (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), defensive end Drew Vanderlin (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and defensive back Jesse Vandenberg (Kaukauna, Wis.)—earned All-GLIAC First Team honors. Named to the All-GLIAC Second Team were junior tight end Bryan LaChapelle (Crystal Falls, Wis.) and junior linebacker Justin Armstrong (Las Vegas, Nev./Mojave).
Gaudard started all 11 games at right tackle for an offense that averaged 374 yards per game. Vanderlin finished fourth in the GLIAC in sacks with 6.5 to go with 33 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss. Vandenberg led the Huskies in tackles on the season for the third straight season with 84 in 2011.
LaChapelle caught 32 passes for 407 yards and six touchdowns on the season en route to his second straight All-GLIAC honor. Armstrong posted 73 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks on the year.
Six Huskies were named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention: junior defensive tackle Jake Clark (Lansing, Mich./Catholic Central), senior linebacker Ian Coughlin (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley), senior free safety Ben Foelker (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest), senior cornerback Quinn Parnell (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), senior cornerback Kenny Stiger (Anaheim, Calif./Fullerton) and senior wide receiver Steve Worthy (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance).
The Michigan Tech football team compiled a 7-4 overall record and 6-4 GLIAC slate in 2011.
