Eskymos sticking with spread offense
NEGAUNEE -- Escanaba opened the 2010 season with three straight wins, but the Eskymos went just 1-5 the rest of the campaign losing close games to Menominee, Lakeland, Wisconsin and, of course, their rivals down the street in Gladstone.
This season, Escanaba hopes to be more competitive than the 0-4 mark the team posted in the Great Northern Conference.
On Friday (8/19) they traveled to Negaunee to scrimmage the Miners and work on the spread offense they adopted over the last few years. It's a system that isn't easy to learn especially from the quarterback position. Luckily for head coach Dan Flynn, he's got returning senior starter Austin Young in that position.
"It's not nice, it's wonderful," said Flynn. "He makes some plays. He works harder than anybody else. He's one of our hard workers, and we have a group of them that work very well."
"We're running it good," said Young. "It's a quick offense so we'll get it down pat before the first game. I'm getting a little more comfortable in it. It's just the start of the year, so I just need to get a little more use to it."
Escanaba opens next Friday night at home against Alpena. Every team's week-by-week schedule is listed on our Friday Night Fever Page.
