HARRIS, MI -- It's less than one month until the Island Resort Championship begins at the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris.
One of the players in this LPGA Futures Tour event was a special guest Wednesday for Media Day.
Laura Kueny is a native of Whitehall in the Lower Peninsula, about 20 miles north of Muskegon. She's two classes away from graduating from Michigan State with a degree in Geography. She was a three time All Big Ten Conference selection, and she was the Conference Player of the Year in 2010 and a Second Team All-American.
Kueny has been battling a wrist injury. "It's very competitive out there," says Kueny. "It's just a learning process. It's a developmental tour, and that's exactly how it sounds. You are preparing for the next level. From what I've seen, it looks like a course I played in East Lansing. I'm feeling pretty good about it."
"This tournament is actually in the middle of our schedule, dead center," says Tracey Kerdyk, LPGA Futures Tour Vice President. "It's the eighth tournament of 16, so it's the halfway point. I think the players are getting excited about the tournament. They're getting ready to head into a Midwest swing; we call it LPGA Lite. It's a lighter version of the LPGA Tour. You have players from Asia, Europe. Everybody will come to this area with their families and spend time in the restaurants and shops."
The Island Resort Championship runs from Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26, with pro-ams set for the prior Wednesday and Thursday.
Three-day passes are currently available for $10. Spectators can purchase tickets at the Island Resort and Casino Showroom ticket office.
