The 2011 All-Upper Peninsula Swimming and Diving Team has been released. The Boy’s Swimmer of the Year is Alec Thurston, a senior from Kingsford. He was the winner in both the 200 and 500 Freestyle races at the Finals. Alec went the entire season without an individual loss, including 24 consecutive first place finishes, set three new team records and several pool records including the new best time for the 500 freestyle at the Houghton pool last weekend.
The Girl’s Swimmer of the Year goes to Sarah Tresedder, a junior swimming with GRIMN (Gwinn, Republic, Ishpeming, Michigamme, Negaunee). Sarah defended her title in the 100 Backstroke and won the 50 Freestyle at Finals.
The top divers include the 2011 winner Junior Emily Aldrich from Manistique, Sophomore Alexandra Sandin from Westwood, and Junior Emily Ockenfels from the Sault. The 2011 Boy’s honorees are Dillon Mayor (Sault), teammate Trevor Gage, and Senior Bjorn Gunderson (GRIMN)
Members of the All-U.P. girls team are Carrie Berkompas (JR, Rudyard) winner of the 200 Freestyle; Olivia Rouleau (FR, Jeffers) winner of the 200 IM; Kinsey Vear (JR, Marquette) winner of the 100 Butterfly; Jill Toorongian (SO, Houghton) winner of the 100 Freestyle; Tara Dowling (SR, Marquette) winner of the 500 Freestyle; and Annie Bengry (SR, Marquette) winner of the 100 Breaststroke. The Girl’s Championship Team from Marquette, placed four more swimmers: Katy Beckstrom (SO), Alex Bott (JR), Linnea Eiben (SR) , and Kali Kisro (SR) . Team runner-up Houghton had Ashley Betts (FR), Rebecca Jaszczak (SO), Erin Michaelson (SR), Erin Ploe (SR). Westwood senior Alison Taras also finished on the team.
The All-U.P. boys team includes winners Colin MacQuarrie (JR, Sault) in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly; Nick Donaldson (SR, Sault) 50 Freestyle; Josh Johnson (SO, Kingsford) 100 Freestyle; Jared Cadwell (JR, Houghton) 100 Backstroke; Stuart Rosemurgy (JR, Houghton) 100 Breaststroke. The 2011 Championship team from Houghton also placed four other members: James DeClerck (SO), Sam Maroste (SR), Drew Meyer (FR), and PJ Sproule (SR). Other swimmers on the team are: Kenny Peterson (SR , GRIMN); Cody Kayser (SR , Manistique); Kelly McCommons (SR , Marquette); Nick Metcalf (JR , Marquette); Lucas Meehan (SR , Rudyard); Josh Messer (SR, Sault)
Roger Woods, the coach of the 2011 U.P. Boys State Champions from Houghton, was named Coach of the Year.
