Michigan Tech scored two short-handed goals to defeat No. 4 Denver 3-2 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday (Feb. 18). Tech had been winless for 25 straight games. Their last win came October 15, a 5-2 win over Minnesota State.

"Our guys did a terrific job with the little things, blocking shots and winning face-offs," said head coach Jamie Russell. "We did a good job staying in our systems. Our young kids showed terrific composure to upset the No. 4 team in the nation."

The Huskies took an early lead thanks to a short-handed goal by Patrick McCadden at 5:23 of the first period. A Pioneer defender dove for a puck headed out of the zone which created a break away for McCadden. The goal was his third of the season and his second in his last three games.

DU evened things up with an even-strength goal by Matt Donovan at 15:45. Donovan scored his seventh goal of the season with a slap shot from the slot just seconds after a power play expired for the Pioneers.

Tech’s offense would continue to produce with a pair of goals in the second period.

Deron Cousens sent a pass to the corner to Bennett Royer who found Bryce Reddick in front of net.

Reddick fired a slap shot by Sam Brittain at 5:11. The goal was his first of the season and the third of his career.

The Huskies scored its second short-handed goal of the game a little over three minutes later. Brad Stebner dug a puck out of the corner in Tech’s defensive zone to McCadden who started the break away for Ryan Furne. Furne beat Brittain with a high back-handed shot for his ninth goal of the season.

Stebner’s assist was his first point of the season.

Denver scored the only goal of the third period off the stick of Drew Shore. Shore fired a hard shot top shelf by Tech goalie Kevin Genoe at 2:18.

DU played much of the final 1:30 of the game with an empty net, but neither team scored.

Denver finished with a 25-21 advantage in shots, and both teams finished 0-4 on the power play.

Genoe finished with 23 saves in the win and Brittain made 18 in the loss.

The two teams will close out the season series Saturday (Feb. 18).
