NMU Mens basketball drops contest at Grand Valley

The Northern Michigan men’s basketball lost its fifth straight game on Thursday (Jan. 20) night as No. 18 Grand Valley State defeated the ‘Cats 60-72. The Lakers remained unbeaten on its home floor and have won 12 straight at GVSU Fieldhouse dating back to last season.

NMU (6-10, 1-8 GLIAC) shot 54.8 percent and had four players in double figures but turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 24 Laker points.

Grand Valley State (14-3, 9-1 GLIAC) started the second half on a 12-4 run to start the second half to get at double digit lead. The Lakers then used a 9-0 run late to double its nine-point lead to 18. GVSU was able to keep the ‘Cats at arms length the rest of the game.

Six Wildcats scored in the game led by Jared Benson’s 13. Mylan Murphy, DeAndre Taylor and Matt Everson each scored 10 points. Martin Gross and Matthew Craggs combined for 17. Benson and Taylor pulled down eight rebounds each.

The Lakers shot 45 percent from the floor and made nine more free throws than NMU. Alvin Storrs led GV with 16 points and eight rebounds while K’Len Morris scored 12 off 4 3-pointers.

NMU trailed by only four (28-32) at half. Both teams made 12 field goals, 3 of them 3-pointers, but Grand Valley converted four free throws for the advantage. The ‘Cats shot 60 percent but turned the ball over 11 times.

NMU plays at Ferris State on Saturday.  Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. from Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids.
