The No. 9-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team made it 10 straight wins with a decisive 67-47 victory over Saginaw Valley State this afternoon at the SDC Gym.  The Huskies had four players in double figures led by junior Krista Kasuboski’s 15 to improve to 13-1 overall and 8-0 in the GLIAC.  SVSU fell to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in league play.

Tech held the Cardinals to just three points through the first six minutes, but the visitors responded by scoring 15 over the next five to take a 17-14 lead.  Back-to-back 3-pointers from Lucy Dernovsek turned the tide back in favor of the Huskies, who finished the half on a 20-4 run.

The margin was cut down to eight by SVSU by the 12-minute mark of the second half.  Tech went on another run—this one keyed by two of Kasuboski’s five 3-pointers in the game—to take control of the game for good.

“I thought we had the perfect mix of scoring from inside, midrange and 3-pointers today,” said head coach Kim Cameron.  “Krista was the spark for us today.  I was very happy with her performance off the bench.”

Kasuboski led all scorers in the game and reset her previous career high.  All 15 of her points came from behind the arc on 5-of-10 shooting.

Dernovsek had a stellar stat line with 12 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and five assists—all in 26 minutes of playing time.  Lisa Staehlin posted 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.  Angela Guisfredi also reached double figures in points with 10.

Tech shot 42 percent from the floor and held the Cardinals to 30 percent.  The Huskies also committed eight fewer turnovers (17-to-9).

Michigan Tech will be on the road for its next two games starting Thursday (Jan. 20) at Ferris State.

Note:  Dernovsek tied the school record for blocks for the second time in two weeks.  She also had six versus Northern Michigan Jan. 6.
