Freshmen Ryan Furne and Milos Gordic each scored one goal and added one assist, but it wasn’t enough as Michigan Tech fell to No. 11 Michigan 4-2 in the semifinals of the 46th Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena Wednesday (Dec. 29).  Junior Josh Robinson made 45 saves for the Huskies.

“You have to give Michigan a lot of credit,” said head coach Jamie Russell.  “They have a very dynamic first line.  I was really proud of Josh tonight.  He has had some ups and downs this season, but played well.  We have a young team, but we showed a lot of character.”

Michigan broke up the scoreless tie with its first goal of the game at 12:28 of the second period.  Robinson made a save on a shot by Luke Moffatt but lost sight of the rebound in the slot.  Lindsay Spark fired in the loose puck for his first goal of the season.

The Huskies would tie the game at 1-1 with a goal by Gordic 6:55 into the final frame.  The goal came after a scramble in front of the Wolverine net that saw the Huskies hack five times at the puck before Gordic finally put it into the net for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

The tie didn’t last very long, however.  UM scored 42 seconds later.  Derek DeBlois sent a pass to Jeff Rohrkemper who tallied his first goal of the season from the slot.

The offensive flurry continued with Tech tying the game at 2-2 less than two minutes later.  Jacob Johnstone sent a pass from the boards to Furne for his sixth goal of the season and third on the power play. Tech finished the game one-for-four on the power play.

At 11:01, Greg Pateryn fired a shot that hit a Tech defender but unfortunately fell to the stick of fellow Wolverine A.J. Treais, who scored the game-winning goal.

UM added an empty-net goal by Luke Glendening with 47 seconds remaining.

Tech finished with 30 shots in the game, including 17 in the third period, and Michigan finished with 49.

Shawn Hunwick finished with 28 saves in the Michigan win.

Tech will face Michigan State in the GLI third place game tomorrow.  Faceoff is set for 4:06 p.m. 

MSU lost to Colorado College 5-4 in the other semifinal.
