HOUGHTON -- Michigan Tech won set one vs. Grand Valley State in GLIAC volleyball at the SDC Gym today, but it was the visiting Lakers who came away with a 3-1 win. GVSU had 15 total blocks and an 8-1 advantage in service aces in the match to improve to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in GLIAC play. The Huskies are now 4-16 overall and 2-11 in the league.
“Our play was a little encouraging today because we played them much better than we did at their place earlier this year,” said head coach Orlando Gonzalez. “We played well in a tight first set to come out on top. We didn’t keep up the offensive balance we had in that first set, and we became a little too predictable.”
Tech trailed 23-21 in set one before Alex Schwalbe and Kristine Sexton posted back-to-back kills. Four points later, Sexton put away the set with a kill for a 26-24 score.
GVSU dominated set two, building up a 19-6 lead and cruising to a 25-13 score to tie the match at a set apiece heading into intermission.
The Huskies honored its three seniors--Alicia Schneider, Kaitlin Wiza and Kasey Woodcock--during the break.
In the third set, Grand Valley State found its blocking game with seven total blocks en route to a 25-16 set victory.
Tech battled back in the fourth set and held leads of 19-17 and 21-20. The set was tied at 24-all before GVSU won two straight, ending the match with a block of Sexton.
Sexton tallied a match-high 18 kills and a solid .256 hitting percentage. Schwalbe added 15 kills on 48 attempts. Woodcock hit a team-best .353 with eight kills.
Eight different Huskies had at least five digs as the Huskies won that statistical category over the Lakers 64-48.
GVSU hit for a .246 percentage in the match compared to a .170 team mark for the Huskies.
Michigan Tech will wrap up its home schedule tomorrow with a 3 p.m. match vs. Ferris State.
