MARQUETTE, MI -- The Northern Michigan University Athletic Department announces the recipients of the Gildo Canale Senior Award for the 2009-10 academic year.

To be awarded the Gildo Canale Senior Award, a student-athlete must be a senior, have competed in intercollegiate athletics for four years at NMU, have a superior academic record, and exhibit high character. The award was established in 1982 by former NMU Athletic Director Gildo Canale. The award is given to a male and female student-athlete.

Nathan Yelk was given the male award while Krista Squiers was the female recipient.

Yelk, a member of the NMU football team, led the 2009 Wildcats with 98 total tackles (51 solo and 47 assisted).  He also recorded nine tackles-for-loss (-35 yards), two sacks, two interceptions, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles.  Yelk returned a 25-yard fumble for a touchdown against Wayne State during the 2009 season.  He was a first team selection to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) football team and was named the Defensive Player of the Week once during the past season.  Yelk was named to the D2Football.com All-America Team and was selected as the NMU football team’s MVP and Most Valuable Linebacker.  In the classroom, Yelk had a 3.59 grade-point average and was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team during the fall.

Squiers, a member of the NMU women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams, placed 11th at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in the weight throw.  At the 2010 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, she placed fifth in the weight throw.  During the 2009-10 indoor season, Squiers won the weight throw at the Lake Superior Challenge, UW-Steven Point Pointer Invitational, St. Scholastica Mini-Meet and the Northern Challenge.  Squiers was selected the GLIAC Athlete of the Week once during the indoor season.  She recently won the javelin at the Bulldog and Northwood Invitationals.  Squiers was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Team for winter sports and is an integrated science/secondary education major with a 3.5 grade-point average.

Both student-athletes received their awards at the Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Saturday, April 24.
