MENDRISIO, Switzerland (AP) — Alejandro Valverde can race for a road world title, despite moves by Italy to have the Spaniard thrown out of the race because of doping allegations.
International Cycling Union president Pat McQuaid made the announcement on Wednesday.
McQuaid said the governing body couldn't prevent the Spanish Vuelta winner from lining up in the world championships on Sunday in Switzerland. That's before the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules on his appeal against a suspension.
McQuaid told The Associated Press, "The rules say Valverde can start and we have to follow the rules."
Sport's highest court is expected to hear Valverde's appeal against a two-year ban on racing in Italy, which was imposed by the Italian Olympic committee in May.
