MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The new president of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves is using an open letter to reassure fans about his qualifications.

The news broke Thursday that David Kahn would take over the top basketball job with the team. He's a former NBA executive who's been out of the league for five years.

However, in the letter posted on the Star Tribune Web site, he says that since leaving the front office of the Indiana Pacers in 2004 he's still been working in pro ball.

He says his company owned four teams in the NBA developmental league in the past four years, which means he's seen plenty of players now in regular rotations on NBA teams.

He also says he's hired nine coaches. So, he says, "I really never left."
