Grand Valley holds off NMU Men 64-56

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell 64-56 to Grand Valley State University on Thursday (Feb. 7) evening from the Berry Events Center. With the loss, NMU is now 5-15 overall and 4-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. GVSU improves to 15-5 overall and 12-4 in conference play.

After a GVSU one-point halftime lead (30-29), the road team outscored the Wildcats 34-27 in the second half. The Lakers went on a 17-1 run in the middle of the second half to take control of the game with a 55-35 lead.

NMU then scored seven straight points in the next two minutes sparked by five points from senior forward TJ Cameron on an old-fashioned three-point play and layup. Junior forward Scooter Johnson also added a bucket in the run.

GVSU was up by 16 with 2:28 but only scored one more point down the stretch as the ‘Cats drained three three-pointers in the final 1:15 to cut the final margin down to eight. Cameron hit two while sophomore guard Spencer Huss drained one.

Cameron finished with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-5 from deep. Johnson was also in double figures with 12 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Kendall Jackson added eight points and six rebounds.

NMU shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47) from the field and were 7-for-19 (36.8 percent) from the three-point line.

GVSU was led by Ricardo Carbajal with 15 points. Tyrone Lee was also in double figures with 10. The Lakers shot 50 percent (22-of-44) from the field and outrebounded NMU 31-24. They scored 21 points off of 16 NMU turnovers.

Northern hosts Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 9). The Bulldogs lost 64-55 at Michigan Tech on Thursday. Saturday’s game tips off at 11 a.m. and is the opening game of the Pink Wave. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness to all three NMU events at the Berry Events Center. Money raised goes to Cancer Care of Marquette County.
