The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell for the second night in a row on Saturday (Jan. 26) with a 4-2 loss at the University of Alaska. After the Wildcats took the lead 1:34 into the game, the Nanooks scored four straight and swept NMU for only the second time in the 48-game all-time series.
NMU falls to 11-12-4 overall and 5-11-4-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Alaska won its sixth straight and improves to 12-8-4 overall and 10-7-3-1 in conference action.
Sophomore forward Ryan Daugherty scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season early in the first. Junior forward Stephan Vigier and freshman forward Justin Rose assisted on the goal.
Colton Beck scored with 4:25 left in the first to tie the game. Tyler Morley gave UAF the lead 5:06 into the second. Beck scored his second goal midway (10:20) through the second period and Colton Parayko scored a power-play goal for the final Nanook goal.
Senior defenseman Scott Macaulay made it a two-goal game 13:44 into the second with a shorthanded goal from senior forward Matt Thurber.
Junior goaltender Jared Coreau started the game and had 15 saves in 31:49 of play. Freshman Michael Doan replaced him for the final 7:01 of the second and the third. He had 18 saves in is fourth appearance.
NMU was 0-for-2 on the power play after two minor UAF penalties. The home team was 1-for-6 on the man advantage after seven Northern penalties, including a five-minute major.
Northern has the weekend off before hosting Ferris State on Feb. 8-9.
