Former MTU icer Rolston to coach Sabres

BUFFALO -- The Buffalo Sabres have elevated Rochester Americans' head coach Ron Rolston to coach the NHL club on an interim basis after firing Lindy Ruff earlier in the day.

Sabres' General Manager Darcy Regier announced that Rolston will guide the club for the rest of this season.  Rolston was named coach of the Amerks two years ago.

Rolston is a Fenton, Michigan native who played his college hockey at Michigan Tech from 1986-89.

He scored 32 goals and had 36 assists for 68 points in his Tech career.

He was an assistant coach for Lake Superior State's national championship team in 1992.

He's also been an assistant at Clarkson, Harvard, Boston College and the US National Development team.

The 45 year old Rolston makes his Sabres coaching debut tomorrow night in a rivalry game at Toronto.
