North Dakota checks its way through MTU

GRAND FORKS, ND (AP) -- Danny Kristo had three points and Zane Gothberg made 31 saves as North Dakota beat Michigan Tech 5-3 Friday night in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.

Kristo had two goals and an assist for North Dakota (20-10-7), which took a one-game lead in the best-of-three playoff series. The second game is Saturday.

Kristo had one of two UND power-play goals. He added an insurance goal late in the third period. Derek Rodwell, Michael Parks and Dillon Simpson also scored for UND.

Gothberg had 13 saves in the second period against the Huskies (12-19-4), who outshot UND 34-24.

Ryan Furne, Riley Sweeney and Jacob Johnstone had goals for Michigan Tech, which got 19 stops from Jamie Phillips.
