NMU Swimmers/Divers third in GLIAC event

The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team finished in third place after day three of competition at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Friday (Feb. 8).

The Wildcats had two GLIAC Champions and 11 top 10 finishes on the day.

"What a difference a day makes," NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. "We broke three school records and have two GLIAC Champions! We swam with heart and passion and it was so much fun. We need to finish strong tomorrow to wrap up the meet."

Sophomore Madisen Sechena won the 400-yard individual medley in a school record time of 4:27.61, giving her an NCAA B cut qualifying time.

Freshman Crystal Bennet won the 100 butterfly in 55.57, also an NCAA B cut time and new school record. She was also fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a B cut time of 1:04.43.

The 400 medley relay squad broke a school record and finished fourth with senior Gaby Alzaga, Sechena, Bennet and sophomore Debbi Lawrence swimming the event. Their B cut qualifying time was 3:49.01.

Lawrence was fourth in the 100 butterfly while sophomore Jordan Iverson placed fifth in the 400 IM. Alzaga was fifth in the 100 backstroke in 57.39 a B cut time.

Sophmore Emily Brennan finished eighth in the 400 IM. Freshman Caitlyn Brendan placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke while senior Olga Budiansky was 10th and sophomore Aspen McHugh, 12th.

Sophomore Emily Bourguignon (1:55.53) was ninth in the 100 backstroke and 12th in the 200 freestyle.

The final day of the championship starts with the preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 9). Finals are at 5:30 p.m. Women’s events are the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay.
