NMU Hockey Ties with Miami on Saturday

The No. 16-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 5 Miami on Saturday (Nov. 10) night from Steve Cady Arena. NMU led 2-1 after the first before the RedHawks tied the game in the third. Miami earned the extra Central Collegiate Hockey Association point with a shootout win at the end of the extra session.

NMU is now 4-4-2 overall and 1-3-2-0 in the CCHA. Miami is 6-2-2 and 3-2-1-1 in the conference.

Sophomore forward Ryan Kesti scored his first of the season and second career goal six minutes into the opening frame to give Northern the early lead. Assisting was junior defenseman Wade Epp and freshman forward Nate Taurence for his first career point.

Miami tied up the game at one with a power play goal by Sean Kuraly 12:27 into the first.

NMU took the lead before the end of the period with a power play goal by junior forward Stephan Vigier at 17:47. Assisting on Vigier’s second of the season was senior forward Matt Thurber and junior defenseman CJ Ludwig.

The RedHawks tied up the game with less than three minutes (17:47) left in the third when Alex Wideman found the back of the net.

In the overtime, Miami generated four shots on goal and NMU had two. Austin Czarnik and Wideman scored in the shootout. Senior forward Kory Kaunisto and Vigier missed their chances for the ‘Cats.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau finished the game with 31 saves, including 15 in the second period. Jay Williams had 25 saves for Miami.

NMU took eight minor penalties. The RedHawks had nine penalties for 26 minutes. Both teams were 1-for-4 on the man advantage.

The ‘Cats travel back to Ohio next weekend for a meeting with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
