The Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated Tiffin 3-2 in a thrilling GLIAC volleyball match Friday (Oct. 19).
The Huskies won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-16, thanks to great hitting. Tech hit .364 and .412 with only four combined errors.
The Dragons used a five and six point run to win set three 25-14. Tiffin also won set four 25-20. The Huskies out hit the Dragons .276 to .154 to win the definitive set 15-13.
"While we certainly could have made this win a lot easier for ourselves, I'm very happy for this group," said head coach Matt Jennings. "We showed a lot of grit coming back in the fifth set like that. And quite frankly, our offense looked very strong in those first two sets."
The two teams finished nearly identical in every statistical category.
Shelby Jones led all players with 21 kills and hit .340 with only four errors. She completed the double-double with 10 digs.
Sylvie Rokosh, who made several key kills in the match, hit .371 with 17 kills and four errors. Jacqueline Aird and Madeline Haben each finished with a team-high 19 digs. Haben chipped in 52 assists.
"We are seeing Shelby and Sylvie get better by the day," said Jennings. "They both are playing good ball right now, and tonight they were the difference. When Sylvie got back in at the end of the fifth set, I knew we were in a good position to finish. I would have preferred that we sealed the deal in the third, but we stayed in it and played tough at big points of the match."
Tech will host Ohio Dominican Saturday (Oct. 20).
