Latest news, weather, high school sports for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

NMU volleyball on a roll beats LSSU 3-1

Lake Superior State fell to 0-2 against its Upper Peninsula rivals after dropping a 3-1 decision for the second straight outing. Northern Michigan defeated the Lakers 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16 during a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday at Cooper Gym.

Nikki Stratelak totaled 13 kills and Emily Snyder added eight to lead LSSU (3-7 overall, 0-2 GLIAC), which also suffered a 3-1 loss to Michigan Tech on Friday. Setter MaryLou Drobish totaled 29 assists, while libero Katie Fitzpatrick had a team-high 19 digs. Gaby Olsen compiled an impressive four solo blocks and six block assists.

Lisa Studnicka totaled 17 kills and Lina Lopes had 15 to lead NMU (9-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC).

The Lakers resume GLIAC play on Sept. 21 at Findlay.
