MARQUETTE -- After 12 years behind the bench for the Marquette Senior High School Redmen hockey team, Head Coach Joe Papin has resigned.
One of only four head coaches in Redmen Hockey history, Papin was with the Redmen for twelve years, eight as head coach.
Since joining the Redmen coaching staff, he has been to eight MHSAA final fours, won two State Championships and finished State runner-up two times. During his tenure, his teams have won nine out of the last twelve regional titles and have won ten Great Northern Hockey Conference and eleven Great Lakes Hockey Conference league titles.
Overall, Coach Papin has a 155-35-14 record as the Redmen head coach. Joe has had several All State players and All-State Academic teams. He was also involved in helping build the team's locker-room at Lakeview Arena and started the Redmen Hockey Golf outing, which has helped defray the ice costs for the all the players on his teams. He was instrumental in starting the Alumni games, an annual event during the holiday break, and the Redmen/Electrician Charity game. In 2011-2012, he helped start the new JV hockey program.
"I've truly enjoyed my time as the Redmen hockey coach and all the players, parents and volunteers I've met. Those relationships will last a lifetime, and that’s what’s most important to me. Running the program takes a lot of time and dedication throughout the year. The time has come to take some time off from being the head coach. It's not fair to the players if I'm not giving them 100 percent of my effort. It's something I've been thinking about for a couple of years. I love the game and will always be a part of it in some way or another,” said Papin.
The Athletic Department will be interviewing applicants for the head hockey coach's position in the near future.
