Northern Womens Track finishes 4th in GLIAC's

ALLENDALE -- (Courtesy of NMU Athletics) The Northern Michigan University outdoor track and field team finished fourth at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 69.5 points from the campus of Grand Valley State University on Friday (May 4). The Lakers won the meet with 239 points. Ashland (124.5) and Tiffin (74) also finished ahead of the Wildcats.

Redshirt freshman Sherice Hewett is the GLIAC Champion in the triple jump with a new conference and school record jump of 41 feet, 0.25 inches. The jump qualifies her for the NCAA Championship. In the 100 hurdles, Hewett placed eighth in 14.67 seconds. She was named GLIAC Field Freshman Athlete of the Meet.

Senior Bailey Franklin finished second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6.5 inches and was third in the triple jump (39 feet, 2.25 inches).

The 4x100 relay squad had a third place finish with a school record time of 46.88 seconds, good for a provisional qualifying time to NCAAs. Freshman Angelina Howard, senior Catherine Angeli, sophomore Samara White and Hewett sprinted for the ‘Cats.

Senior Catherine Angeli placed fourth in the 200-meter dash (24.72) and fifth in the 100-meter dash (12.23).

Freshman Larissa Halonen finished 10th in the 1500 (4:44.26). Junior Mallory Celaya had an eighth place finish in the 5,000 in 17:55.38 while Halonen was 17th. Junior Rita Woitas (21st) and freshman Olivia Howard (23rd) also ran the 5,000.

The 4x400 relay team finished ninth as senior Melissa Christensen, junior Colby West, sophomore Kristina Mattson and sophomore Sydney Schultz raced for Northern.

 Junior Brooke Granquist finished 10th in the triple jump. Sophomores Kylie Basarabski (20th) and Mary Dillow (22nd) competed in the discus. Dillow( 27th) also competed in the hammer throw.

White (11th) and junior Mariah Beaman (18th) participated in the long jump.

The ‘Cats compete at the Last Chance Qualifier next weekend (May11-12) back at GVSU before heading to the NCAA Championship two weekends later in Colorado.
