Art Viens, dedicated to Kingsford High School athletics for more than 45 years, has been named the recipient of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association's prestigious James E. Trethewey Distinguished Service Award.

Viens, Kingsford High School boys basketball scorekeeper until his retirement last season, also maintains the Flivvers' football and boys basketball record books.

Viens' other duties include overseeing operation of the Flivver Field pressbox. He also helps out during the U.P. Track & Field Finals in Kingsford.

"Art Viens has represented the maize and blue his whole life and has never once asked for anything," said one friend of the 1954 Kingsford High School graduate.

James E. Trethewey was a founding member of UPSSA, longtime editor of the Marquette Mining Journal and the first executive director of the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.
