BRIDGEPORT, CT (AP) -- Troy Grosenick made 20 saves and Union won its first Division I hockey tournament game, beating Michigan State 3-1 in the first round of the Bridgeport Regional on Friday.
The top-seeded Dutchmen (25-7-7) scored in each of the first two periods for a 2-0 lead, and Grosenick took care of the rest.
Union advances to play the winner of No. 2 Miami (Ohio) University and No. 3 UMass-Lowell on Saturday.
Max Novak scored at 15:09 of the first period to give Union a 1-0 lead. Novak skated in on Will Yanakeff on the rush off the left wing and beat him high on the block side.
Welsh added an even-strength goal at 3:20 of the second period. Mat Bodie assisted on the play.
Matt Berry scored for Michigan State (19-16-4) at 19:21 of the second.
