Second half shooting woes proved costly for the Northern Michigan women's basketball team as it fell 54-38 to Ferris State on Monday (Dec. 19).

With the loss, NMU falls to 5-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while FSU improves to 6-2 and 4-1 in the GLIAC. The loss ends the Wildcats two-game conference win streak.

NMU jumped out to an early six point, 11-5 lead at the 14:13 mark of the first half off of a jumper from freshman guard Alyssa Colla. From there, the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good, holding off a late charge by the ‘Cats to end the half. FSU went into the break up 24-21.

Shooting woes plagued the ‘Cats in the second half, as NMU shot only 28.0 percent from the floor and 7.7 percent from three-point land in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs capitalized on the ‘Cats flat offense and widened their lead to double-digits for good by the 8:01 mark.

The ‘Cats were outscored 30-17 in the second half after trailing by just three points at the half.

The ‘Cats were led by senior forward Hillary Bowling with 11 points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Abbey DeBruin chipped in five points and a team high six rebounds.

The Bulldogs were led by Sarah DeShone with 13 points and three steals.

NMU shot only 32.6 percent (15-46) from the field and 10.5 percent (2-19) from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the ‘Cats 35-23.

NMU is off for the holiday break, returning to the hardwood on Dec. 28 for a non-conference matchup against Finlandia at the Berry Events Center.

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
