Coming off back-to-back losses this past weekend, the Northern Michigan women’s basketball team edged NAIA No. 7 Davenport University 56-50 on Monday (Nov. 28) to improve to .500 on the season.

With the win, the Wildcats snapped the Panthers 31-game home winning streak. The two teams combined for 54 turnovers, including 32 turnovers by NMU.

NMU (3-3) opened the contest with an early 12-4 lead following a jumper from freshman forward Abbey DeBruin at the 12:06 mark in the first half.

Davenport (5-2) trimmed the lead to just three points just before the half off of a pair of made free throws from Julie Janish. The ‘Cats took a 26-23 lead into halftime.

After trailing for the first 23 minutes of the game, the Panthers took their first lead with a layup from Janish at the 16:49 mark to take a 29-28 lead.

Davenport extended their lead to six points one minute later off of a Carrie Grubius three-pointer.

NMU tied the game at 39-39 at the 8:15 mark from a three-pointer by freshman Alyssa Colla and never looked back, holding Davenport at bay.

The ‘Cats were led by freshman guard Alyssa Colla with 12 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Hillary Bowling also had 11 points, six rebounds and one block.

The Panthers were led by Julie Janish with 11 points and five boards.

The ‘Cats shot 35.2 percent from the field (19-54) and 33.3 percent (5-15) from three point land.

NMU held a plus-11 margin in rebounds, out-rebounding Davenport 40-29.

The ‘Cats continue their four-game road swing this Saturday (Dec. 3) at Michigan Tech as they open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
